Sámara
Calm waters and a laid-back pace
About Samara
Samara is one of the most consistently recommended beaches in Costa Rica for families and first-time visitors. A protective reef breaks the Pacific swell, creating calm, swimmable water even when other beaches are rough. The village has grown steadily but retains a relaxed, authentic character.
The beach is long and gently curved, lined with palm trees and a handful of low-key restaurants and surf schools. Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and snorkeling around Isla Chora are popular activities. Samara is also a base for exploring the quieter beaches of the central Nicoya Peninsula.
Highlights
- Playa Samara (calm, reef-protected swimming)
- Kayaking & stand-up paddleboarding
- Surf lessons for beginners
- Isla Chora snorkeling
- Ultralite flights over the coast
- Playa Carrillo (nearby, quieter)
Getting there & around
Samara is about 4 hours from San Jose by road, or 30 minutes by small plane to the local airstrip. Shared shuttles connect Samara to San Jose, Tamarindo, and Nosara. The village is walkable.
View transport optionsHow long to stay
3–5 nights suits Samara well. It is a place to slow down — mornings on the beach, afternoons exploring nearby Playa Carrillo or kayaking the estuary, evenings at the village restaurants.
Best season
The dry season (December–April) brings reliable sunshine and calm seas. The green season (May–November) is quieter and more affordable — the reef still protects the beach, making it swimmable year-round.
