About Papagayo

The Papagayo Peninsula (Peninsula Papagayo) is Costa Rica's most exclusive resort destination — a series of sheltered coves along the Gulf of Papagayo, home to some of the country's finest hotels and residences. The peninsula benefits from a particularly dry microclimate, with more sunny days than almost anywhere else in Costa Rica.

The calm, turquoise water of the gulf is ideal for swimming, sailing, and water sports. Several of the coves — including Playa Nacascolo and Playa Buena — are protected within the Guanacaste Conservation Area, keeping them pristine. The peninsula is about 20 minutes from Liberia Airport.

Best season

Papagayo has the most reliable dry season in Costa Rica — the Papagayo winds (December–March) keep the air fresh and the skies clear. It is one of the sunniest corners of the country year-round.

Combine with

Papagayo is 30 minutes from Liberia Airport and 45 minutes from Playas del Coco. Tamarindo is 1.5 hours south. For a nature extension, Rincon de la Vieja is 1 hour away.

Travel tips

  • The dry season (November to April) is when Papagayo shines — expect near-daily sunshine.
  • Book resort accommodation well in advance for December–January and Easter week.
  • Playa Nacascolo is a public beach accessible even if you're not staying at a resort.
  • Sailing and catamaran tours depart from the marina and offer a great way to explore the coves.
