About Tortuguero
Tortuguero is one of Costa Rica's most remote and special destinations — a labyrinth of river canals surrounded by dense tropical rainforest, accessible only by boat or plane. The village of Tortuguero is small and car-free, giving it a unique character.
Tortuguero National Park is world-famous as a sea turtle nesting site, especially for the green turtle. Between July and October, thousands of turtles come to lay their eggs on its beaches. The park also shelters manatees, caimans, monkeys, and an extraordinary diversity of birds.

View transport optionsHow long to stay
2–3 nights is the minimum for Tortuguero. The remoteness means travel time is significant — arriving and leaving on the same day wastes the journey. Three nights lets you do a canal tour, a turtle tour (in season), and a morning birdwatching walk.
Best season
Turtle season (July–October for green turtles, March–July for leatherbacks) is the most popular time to visit. Outside turtle season, Tortuguero is still exceptional for wildlife and canals — and significantly quieter. The Caribbean coast receives rain year-round.
Combine with
Tortuguero is most commonly combined with San José (3–4 hrs) as a first or last stop. Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is 4 hours south by road. Many travelers do a Caribbean loop: San José → Tortuguero → Puerto Viejo → San José.
Travel tips
- Turtle season is July–October — book well in advance.
- Night turtle tours require a certified guide.
- Pack waterproof gear — it rains frequently.
- The village is car-free — everything is on foot or by boat.
- Book accommodation well ahead, especially during turtle season.
Tips by traveler type
Wildlife enthusiasts
Canal tours at dawn are the most productive for wildlife — manatees, caimans, river otters, and over 300 bird species. A knowledgeable guide is essential for spotting the best animals.
Eco-travelers
Tortuguero is one of Costa Rica's most important conservation areas. Choose lodges and operators that actively support the Sea Turtle Conservancy — your visit directly funds protection.
Families
Night turtle tours have age restrictions (usually 8+) and require a certified guide. Canal canoe tours are suitable for all ages and offer excellent wildlife sightings without the physical demands of hiking.
