Tortuguero National Park Cerro Hike

A guided hike to Cerro Tortuguero — the highest point on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast — with views of the canals, rainforest, and the sea.

Of the 200 volcanic cones in Costa Rica, Cerro Tortuguero is considered an inactive volcano. At 119 meters, it is the highest point on the entire Costa Rican Caribbean coast. The hike begins with a boat ride from the village of Tortuguero to the community of San Francisco, where the trail starts. From the summit, you enjoy panoramic views of the Tortuguero canals, the rainforest, the lagoons, and the Caribbean Sea. Along the trail, you may encounter three-toed sloths, tapirs, basilisks (the lizard that runs on water), iguanas, and monkeys — howler, spider, and white-faced. Tortuguero is home to 405 bird species.
