About San Jose

San Jose is the capital and largest city of Costa Rica, and the country's main international gateway. Most visitors pass through on their way to the beaches and national parks, but the city rewards those who take time to explore. The historic center has several world-class museums, colorful neighborhoods, and a food scene that has evolved dramatically in recent years.

Barrio Amon and Barrio Escalante are the most interesting neighborhoods for walking — lined with Victorian-era architecture, independent restaurants, and coffee shops. The Central Market (Mercado Central) is a lively hub for local food and crafts. Day trips from San Jose reach Poas Volcano, Irazu Volcano, and the coffee farms of the Central Valley within 1–2 hours.

How long to stay

1–2 nights is typical for San Jose — most travelers use it as a gateway. But the city rewards a longer stay: the museums, markets, and day trips to Poas Volcano or Irazu can fill 3–4 days.

Best season

San Jose has a mild climate year-round (18–26°C) due to its elevation. The dry season (December–April) brings clearer skies and better volcano views. The wet season (May–November) brings afternoon rain but lush green surroundings.
