Costa Rica's main tourist destinations are well connected by both private transfers and shared shuttles. The routes overlap — San José to La Fortuna, Monteverde to Manuel Antonio, Tamarindo to San José — but the two services work very differently. This guide explains the practical differences so you can choose the option that fits your group and itinerary.
How each service works
Private transfers
A private transfer is a dedicated vehicle for your group only. The driver picks you up at your accommodation at the agreed time and takes you directly to your destination, without stops for other passengers. Departure time is set by you. The price is per vehicle, not per person.
Shared shuttles
Shared shuttles operate on fixed daily schedules between the main tourist destinations. You share the vehicle with other travelers. Pickup is from a designated zone in each town — typically near the central park or main bus terminal — rather than door-to-door. The price is per person.
Side-by-side comparison
| Private transfer | Shared shuttle | |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle | Your group only | Shared with other travelers |
| Departure time | You choose | Fixed schedule |
| Pickup | At your accommodation | Designated zone in each town |
| Price structure | Per vehicle | Per person |
| Luggage | Standard allowance per person; oversized items declared at booking | Limited — 1 bag + 1 carry-on per person |
| Flexibility | High — departs when you are ready | Low — fixed departure, no waiting |
| Journey time | Direct — no intermediate stops | Longer — multiple pickups along the route |
| Child seats | Available on request | Not typically available |
| Airport transfers | Driver monitors your flight | Not available for airport routes |
When a private transfer makes more sense
- You are traveling as a family or group of 3 or more — the per-vehicle price often becomes comparable to or lower than the combined per-person shuttle cost
- You have children, especially young children who need car seats
- You are arriving or departing from an airport — shared shuttles do not serve airport routes
- Your itinerary has specific timing requirements: an early morning departure, a late arrival, or a connection to another activity
- You have significant luggage — surfboards, dive equipment, strollers, or more than one bag per person
- You prefer not to share a vehicle with strangers or make unplanned stops
- You have elderly travelers or passengers with mobility considerations
When a shared shuttle makes more sense
- You are traveling solo or as a couple and the per-person cost is significantly lower than a private vehicle
- Your schedule is flexible and the fixed departure time works for you
- You are traveling light — one bag and one carry-on per person
- You are comfortable sharing the journey with other travelers
- You are on a budget-conscious itinerary and the route is well served by scheduled shuttles
For groups of 3 or more, compare the total cost of a private transfer against the combined per-person shuttle price before deciding. The difference is often smaller than expected, and the private option adds flexibility and door-to-door pickup.
What to confirm before booking
Whichever service you choose, confirm the following before finalising your booking:
- Exact pickup location: for private transfers, confirm the full name and address of your accommodation. For shared shuttles, confirm the pickup zone and where to wait.
- Departure time: for shared shuttles, check the scheduled departure and whether it fits your plans. For private transfers, agree the time when booking.
- Luggage: declare any oversized or excess items at booking, not on the day of travel.
- Children: if you are traveling with young children and need a car seat, request it at booking. Confirm availability for your specific route.
- Airport transfers: if you are arriving or departing from SJO or LIR, a private transfer is the appropriate service. Share your flight number so the driver can monitor for delays.
- Booking lead time: during high season (December–April), book at least 48 hours in advance. Shared shuttles on popular routes fill up quickly.
The Arenal Lake Crossing: a special case
The connection between Monteverde and La Fortuna uses a different format — a combination of road and boat transport across Lake Arenal. It is available in both shared and private configurations, but the logistics differ from a standard road transfer. See the Arenal Lake Crossing guide and the Monteverde to La Fortuna transport guide for details.
