The Arenal Lake Crossing: a complete guide

The scenic boat-and-bus route between La Fortuna and Monteverde is one of Costa Rica's most memorable journeys. Here is everything you need to know.

1 min readLa Fortuna & Monteverde

The Arenal Lake Crossing is the most scenic way to travel between La Fortuna (Arenal) and Monteverde. Instead of taking the long road around the lake — which adds 2–3 hours to the journey — you cross Lake Arenal by boat and continue by bus or van to Monteverde. The total journey takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours and includes some of the most dramatic views in Costa Rica.

How the route works

The crossing combines three segments: a van or bus from your accommodation in La Fortuna to the lake dock at El Castillo, a 45–60 minute boat ride across Lake Arenal with views of the Arenal Volcano, and a van or bus from the Monteverde side of the lake up to Santa Elena or your accommodation.

  • Departure from La Fortuna: typically 7:30 AM or 12:30 PM (times vary by operator).
  • Boat crossing: approximately 45–60 minutes across Lake Arenal.
  • Arrival in Monteverde (Santa Elena): approximately 3.5–4 hours after departure.
  • The route also operates in reverse: Monteverde to La Fortuna.

What to expect on the boat

The boat is a covered motorized vessel that holds 10–20 passengers. The crossing is generally calm, though the lake can be choppy in strong winds. On clear days, the views of Arenal Volcano rising above the water are exceptional. Bring a light jacket — it can be cool on the water, especially in the morning.

💡

Sit on the right side of the boat (when facing the bow) for the best views of Arenal Volcano during the morning crossing from La Fortuna.

The road to Monteverde

The final stretch from the lake to Monteverde is on an unpaved mountain road. It is bumpy but passable in a regular van. The scenery — cloud forest, cattle farms, and mountain views — is part of the experience. Some operators use 4WD vehicles for this section.

Shared shuttle vs. private transfer

The crossing is available as a shared shuttle (you travel with other passengers) or as a private transfer (your group has the vehicle to yourselves). Shared shuttles are more economical; private transfers offer more flexibility on timing and stops.

  • Shared shuttle: fixed departure times, lower cost, you may share with other travelers.
  • Private transfer: flexible timing, direct route, ideal for families or groups with luggage.
  • Both options include the boat crossing.

Tips and common questions

  • Book in advance during peak season (December–April) — the crossing fills up quickly.
  • Bring motion sickness medication if you are sensitive to boat travel.
  • The crossing operates year-round, but lake conditions can affect the boat in heavy rain or strong winds. Cancellations are rare but possible.
  • Luggage is stored in the van or bus; keep valuables with you on the boat.
  • There are no restroom facilities on the boat. Use facilities before boarding.
