This itinerary is a practical framework, not a fixed package. It covers the three regions most first-time visitors want to see — La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano, the Monteverde cloud forest, and the Pacific coast — in a logical sequence that minimises backtracking. Availability, pricing, and specific activities depend on your travel dates and group. Use this as a starting point and adapt it to your priorities. To build a personalised version, see our tailor-made trip planner.
This route works best arriving into San José (SJO) and departing from San José or Liberia (LIR). If you fly into Liberia, consider reversing the itinerary and starting on the Pacific coast.
Day 1: Arrive in San José — transfer to La Fortuna
Most international flights arrive in San José in the morning or early afternoon. From the airport, a private transfer to La Fortuna takes approximately 2.5–3 hours via the highway through Ciudad Quesada. Shared shuttles are also available but take longer with hotel pickups.
- Arrive SJO, clear customs and immigration.
- Private transfer or shared shuttle to La Fortuna (2.5–3 hours).
- Check in, rest, and explore the town in the evening.
- Dinner in La Fortuna town centre — several good local restaurants near the central park.
Day 2: La Fortuna — Arenal Volcano and hot springs
La Fortuna sits at the base of Arenal Volcano, one of the most recognisable landscapes in Central America. The volcano is active but safe to visit; the best views are typically in the morning before clouds build. Afternoon rain is common, which makes the hot springs an ideal evening activity.
- Morning: guided hike in Arenal Volcano National Park (lava fields, primary forest, volcano views).
- Afternoon: La Fortuna Waterfall hike — a 500-step descent to a 70-metre cascade with a natural swimming pool.
- Evening: hot springs — several options from budget thermal pools to luxury resort spas.
Day 3: La Fortuna — adventure or wildlife
La Fortuna has one of the highest concentrations of activities in Costa Rica. Day 3 is best used for whichever experience you prioritised: white-water rafting on the Balsa River, a wildlife float on the Peñas Blancas River, or a morning canopy tour.
- Option A (adventure): white-water rafting on the Balsa River — Class III–IV rapids, suitable for most adults.
- Option B (wildlife): Peñas Blancas River float — calm boat tour through jungle canals with sloths, caimans, and birds.
- Option C (families): hanging bridges walk in the rainforest canopy, followed by a chocolate or cooking tour.
- Evening: free time in La Fortuna or a second hot springs visit.
Day 4: La Fortuna to Monteverde — lake crossing
The transfer from La Fortuna to Monteverde is one of the most scenic in Costa Rica. The jeep-boat-jeep route crosses Lake Arenal by boat (45 minutes) with views of the volcano on clear mornings. The full transfer takes approximately 3–3.5 hours. Alternatively, a private transfer via the mountain road takes 2.5–3.5 hours.
- Morning: check out and transfer to Monteverde via Lake Arenal crossing.
- Arrive Monteverde early afternoon — check in and rest.
- Afternoon: walk the Santa Elena town centre, visit the Bat Jungle or Orchid Garden.
- Evening: night walk in the cloud forest reserve (guided, 1.5–2 hours).
Book the lake crossing transfer the day before departure. Morning boats (around 08:00) offer the best chance of clear volcano views. See our full guide to the Monteverde–La Fortuna transfer for a detailed comparison of all options.
Day 5: Monteverde — cloud forest and canopy
Monteverde is the cloud forest capital of Costa Rica. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve are both excellent; the latter is less crowded and slightly cheaper. Morning is the best time for wildlife — the resplendent quetzal is most active at dawn.
- Early morning: guided birdwatching walk in the cloud forest (quetzal season: January–May).
- Mid-morning: hanging bridges walk through the forest canopy.
- Afternoon: zip-line canopy tour — Monteverde has some of the longest cables in the country.
- Evening: free time in Santa Elena.
Day 6: Monteverde to the Pacific coast
The transfer from Monteverde to the Pacific coast takes 3–4 hours depending on your destination. Manuel Antonio (south Pacific) and Tamarindo (north Pacific / Guanacaste) are the most popular beach destinations for this itinerary. Choose based on your priorities: Manuel Antonio for wildlife and national park beaches; Tamarindo for surf, nightlife, and a more developed resort scene.
- Morning: check out and transfer to your chosen Pacific destination.
- Manuel Antonio: 3.5–4 hours via San José or the Costanera Sur highway.
- Tamarindo: 3–3.5 hours via the Interamerican Highway.
- Afternoon: arrive, check in, first beach walk.
- Evening: sunset on the Pacific.
Days 7–8: Pacific coast — beach, wildlife, and water activities
Two full days on the Pacific coast. The specific activities depend on your destination, but both Manuel Antonio and Tamarindo offer a strong range of options.
If you chose Manuel Antonio
- Day 7: Manuel Antonio National Park — guided wildlife walk (sloths, monkeys, scarlet macaws), swimming at Playa Manuel Antonio.
- Day 8: catamaran tour with snorkelling and dolphin watching, or kayaking in the mangroves.
If you chose Tamarindo
- Day 7: surf lesson on Playa Tamarindo (beginner-friendly), afternoon at leisure.
- Day 8: catamaran sunset sailing with snorkelling stop, or day trip to Playa Conchal (one of the best beaches in Guanacaste).
Day 9: Final beach day or optional day trip
Use day 9 for whatever you did not fit in earlier, or for a slower pace before the journey home. Popular options include a cooking class, a visit to a local farm, or simply a full day at the beach.
- Option A: cooking class — learn to prepare traditional Costa Rican dishes.
- Option B: day trip to a nearby destination (Dominical and Uvita from Manuel Antonio; Playa Flamingo or Playa Grande from Tamarindo).
- Option C: rest day — pool, beach, and a good meal.
Day 10: Return to San José — departure
Most international flights depart San José in the morning or early afternoon. Allow enough time for the transfer: Manuel Antonio to SJO is approximately 3 hours; Tamarindo to SJO is approximately 4–4.5 hours. If your flight is early, consider spending the last night in San José or near the airport.
- Morning: transfer to San José (or Liberia if flying from LIR).
- Allow at least 3 hours before your flight for the transfer and check-in.
- Optional: if time allows, a stop at a café or market in San José before the airport.
If your return flight departs before 10:00, plan to spend the previous night near the airport. The transfer from Manuel Antonio or Tamarindo takes 3–4.5 hours and early-morning departures from the coast are risky.
Adapting this itinerary
Families with children
Replace the white-water rafting on Day 3 with the Peñas Blancas wildlife float or hanging bridges. Add an extra day in La Fortuna if your children enjoy the hot springs. Manuel Antonio is generally the better beach choice for families — the national park beaches are calmer and the wildlife is exceptional.
Couples and honeymooners
Upgrade the hot springs to a private pool experience. Consider a sunset sailing catamaran on the Pacific coast. Nosara or Santa Teresa are quieter alternatives to Tamarindo for couples who prefer a more relaxed atmosphere.
Wildlife enthusiasts
Add a night at Tortuguero (turtle nesting July–October) between San José and La Fortuna, which adds 1–2 days to the itinerary. Replace the Tamarindo option with the Osa Peninsula for the most biodiverse experience in the country.
Shorter trips (7 days)
Drop one of the La Fortuna activity days and reduce the beach section to one destination with two nights. The core route — San José → La Fortuna → Monteverde → beach → San José — works well in 7 days if you move efficiently.
